Project Title:
Expanding IPMImages to Meet the Needs of Southern IPM Extension Education and Plant Diagnostic Communities |

Start Date: Jul-30-2008 End Date: Jul-29-2010 |
Summary:
This Extension project will expand IPMImages.org to increase S.E. IPM Extension and Plant Diagnostic Communities support by working with S.E. Land Grant Universities to digitize and add images to IPMImages where they can be used by educators, practitioners, farmers and the general public.
A 3-year SR-IPM project involving Bugwood and SPDN built an educational, training and outreach image support system is ending soon. Project results include: expanding the list of species of concern from 20 to 1,290 species; adding 7,700 images (POW target was 3,000); and modifying the user interface and search features to better support SPDN and IPM. In 2007, IPMImages received 12.1 million hits. Many more images were acquired than were budgeted for in the project. Recently, several additional SPDN cooperators expressed a willingness to contribute several image sets. Bugwood personnel believe that an additional 5,000 images could be added through this cooperation, but inadequate personnel time exists in the current project to complete these tasks. In this project, we outline cooperation and strategies and request funding to enable these collaborations and Information Technology linkages to be developed and made operational. Objectives: 1. build upon the established cooperation; 2. work with additional SPDN and IPM cooperators; 3. develop linkages with the Georgia Distance Diagnostics thru Digital Imaging system; 4. identify and integrate additional image sets; 5. develop and improve linkages to NPDN/PDIS; 6. improve image submission, processing and retrieval tools; 7. expand tools to increase SPDN and IPM support. |
Final Report: |
Results 1. The Center used the information obtained during FY 2005 SR-IPM project titled Building an educational, training and outreach image support system for the Southern Plant Diagnostics System that ended in April 2008 as a starting point and resource for information needed during this project. 2. The Center worked with SPDN LandGrant University Diagnostics Laboratory personnel working at 12 locations across the SE US to obtain, enter, integrate new images into IPMImages system as a result of this project. |
Outcomes The Center added 7,671 images on 719 subjects through this project to IPMImages.org. One hundred and eleven (111) of those subjects were species of those subjects were species not previously available through IPMImages. |
Impacts 1. Project personnel worked with Plant Disease Diagnosticians at different University Diagnostics Laboratories across the S.E. US, to develop The Diagnosticians Cookbook http://wiki.bugwood.org/Diagnosticians_cookbook using the BugwoodWiki system. Through The Diagnosticians Cookbook, diagnosticians built a comprehensive set of standardize, well-illustrated diagnostic procedures and techniques that could be shared with other interested plant disease diagnosticians. The participating Plant Diagnosticians believe that The Diagnosticians Cookbook will result in improved consistency of the diagnosis of plant diseases made by those laboratories. 2. The Center worked with state and regional personal and developed tools and interfaces to successfully build IPMImages through collaborations resulting from this project. Diagnosticians from the following laboratories participated in and contributed to building and debugging The Diagnosticians Cookbook: - Clemson University, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - Louisiana State University, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - University of Florida, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - Florida Department of Agriculture, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - University of Kentucky, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - Auburn University, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - Mississippi State University, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - North Carolina State University, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - University of Georgia, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - University of Puerto Rico, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory - Virginia Poly Tech, Plant Diagnostics Laboratory Setbacks: The Center also attempted to work with the National Plant Diagnostics Network Pest (NPDN) Plant Diagnostic Information System (PDIS) personnel to improve linkages, develop web services and other computer linkage tools that will enable searches, informational exchanges and better integration of images and information now contained (or that will be contained) within those specific systems to be available to the other collaborating systems. However, The Center was unable to fulfill these tasks with NPDN PDIS due to personnel changes and availability of resources at PDIS. The original of this report was submitted to the USDA CRIS system in October 2010. |
