Summary:
The project entails coordinated outreach and education efforts to build support and utilization of Certified Weed-Free Gravel programs and associated BMPs (equipment washing, early detection) not only locally, but statewide and across the border in Canada. Activities include organizing and promoting an educational workshop for industry and government personnel, follow-up work to build program participation, creating a web page devoted to sources of weed-free material, distributing workshop materials to partner organizations in the field of invasive plant management, and presenting project results at the annual conference of Alaska-Yukon Territory invasive management professionals.
Objectives: 1. Organize and promote a 2 hr workshop in May in Kenai. Target audiences for the workshop include oil & gas companies conducting or planning to conduct activities in or adjoining the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska Department of Transportation, and contractors (gravel, trucking and road building companies), as well as local, state and federal land managers. Workshop topics include: History of Kenai National Wildlife Refuges weed-free gravel policy and statewide standards, Invasive plants and why they matter to the economy, IPM approaches and the importance of Early Detection and Rapid Response, Weed-Free Gravel Certification Program how it works, Resources: new Alaska Weed ID phone app, on-line course on best management practices for ROW management 2. Share project learnings with invasive plant professionals across Alaska and the Yukon Territory |
