Project Directors (PDs):

Christopher Greer [2]
Randall Mutters [3]
Lead State: CA

Lead Organization: The Regents of the University of California
Undesignated Funding: $9,936
Start Date: Jan-01-2011

End Date: Mar-14-2012
Pests Involved: Stored grain pests
Site/Commodity: Rice
Area of Emphasis: IPM
Summary: Rice in California is grown in approximately 500,000 acres annually, mostly in the Sacramento valley, and production averages four billion pounds. After harvest, grain is stored on farm or in commercial facilities for time periods that range from a few weeks to several months. Insect infestations during storage can reduce the value of grain by reducing grade and quality. The current status of IPM of stored rice insects is unknown. We propose to conduct a mail survey of Sacramento valley rice producers and commercial storage managers to collect baseline data regarding storage infrastructure, insect management practices, insecticide use, and infestation economic impacts. This information will serve to determine stored grain IPM research and extension needs, guide future research and extension efforts and measure future IPM adoption. Additionally, through outreach, meetings with stakeholders and publications, we will promote the adoption of IPM practices of stored rice insects.

Objectives: 1. Collect baseline data regarding rice storage structures, insect management practices, insecticides use, and economic impacts of stored rice insects from Sacramento valley rice producers and dryers and mills.

2. Determine the current use of insect IPM practices in California stored rice systems.

3. Prioritize research and extension insect IPM needs in California stored rice systems.

4. Promote IPM of stored rice insects through outreach.
