Outcomes Since 2007, the fungicide resistance management guide has been distributed and promoted at state and regional vegetable meetings such as the Atlantic Coast Agricultural Convention and Trade Show in Atlantic City and Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Hershey, PA at the Delaware Fruit and Vegetable Association Meeting in Harrington DE each year. The guide has also been promoted and distributed at many local meetings and twi-light tours throughout the region by project collaborators over the past three years. In 2009, project collaborators published an article in Crop Management, an on-line peer-reviewed journal, and presented the guide as a poster presentation at the American Phytopathological Society's (APS) national meeting. Based on the acceptance and success of the resistance management guide, in 2009, a fungicide resistance management (FRAC) table was developed by project collaborators with funding from a NE-IPM mini-grant for cucurbit powdery and downy mildew control in the Northeast. The FRAC table was made available to all cucurbit growers, crop advisors, extension personnel and industry representatives in 13 NE states via the NE IPM center's website (http://northeastipm.org/ipm_searchadv.cfm) or in a laminated, hardcopy format upon request. A peer-reviewed article on the cucurbit powdery and downy mildew FRAC table was also published in Crop Management in 2009. Both resistance management guides will be updated and available to stakeholders in 2010 via the internet or in hardcopy format. |

Impacts Since 2007 over 5,000 fungicide resistance management guides have been distributed to vegetable growers, county extension agents, extension specialists and crop advisors in the mid-Atlantic and surrounding region. The fungicide resistance management guide has become an important reference tool for all stakeholders in the region by helping them understand the importance of FRAC codes and in making correct fungicide resistance management decisions to help mitigate resistance development. The fungicide resistance management guide is an important supplement to the mid-Atlantic commercial vegetable recommendations guide which has a distribution of over ~3,500 copies a year. With an annual distribution of ~2,000 resistance management guides a year to vegetable growers, crop consultants and extension personnel we estimate the guide is reaching 50% of the vegetable growers in the region, representing ~110,000 A of vegetable production. With the use of this guide, stakeholders will develop an improved understanding fungicide chemistries, FRAC codes, and a have valuable IPM tool to help them make proper decisions when managing disease and resistance management in their vegetable operations. The long-term effects of having this information readily available should help vegetable growers make more informed decisions and help reduce costs associated with the unwarranted use and loss of fungicide chemistries due to resistance development. To our knowledge this is the first fungicide resistance management guide developed and dedicated for regional use in vegetable crop production in the United States. A fungicide resistance management guide such as this could serve as a model for other crop pests (i.e. such as insects and weeds) and other agricultural-related industries (i.e. such as small fruit and tree fruit production). |
