Summary:
New York is the 4th leading producer of processed green peas in the U.S. with approximately 20,000 acres planted each year. This proposal is to develop a Pest Management Strategic Plan (PMSP) for processing peas in NY. A planning committee composed of growers, crop consultants, processors, researchers, extension educators, and government officials will meet to discuss and prioritize research, regulatory and educational needs. The results of this meeting will be used to form the PMSP.
Objectives: To review and prioritize the research, regulatory and educational needs for processing peas in New York and compile the information into a Pest Management Strategic Plan. Proposal |

Outcomes Participants in the working group felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of the workgroup meeting. Many of the members participate in the annual processing pea advisory, which sets research priorities for a RFP that pursues from the NY Vegetable Research Association and Council. However, there has not heretofore been an opportunity to discuss pea production from start to finish in great detail. The process was hindered by the fact that grant funding was announced too late to be able to organize and hold the workgroup meeting in the first year. The only window of time for such a meeting is early in the winter after field activities have ceased and before contracting and planting plans begin for the coming year. Furthermore, at the time the workgroup was scheduled to meet, the future of processing pea production became questionable due to a downward turn in the industry and the pending sale of the NY processing plants. The industry still felt that the project was worthwhile and pursued with development of the PMSP. Indeed, with the purchase of the NY plants by Bonduelle Corp., pea production has so far continued in New York. |

Impacts The following is a list of impacts from the project Strengthened relationships/collaboration among workgroup participants Documented priorities guide for the pea industry, researchers, extension educators and regulatory officials. The process of the workgroup meeting and the subsequent documentation (PMSP) aids processors in passing sustainability audits from Sysco Foods and others. The auditors want to see active discussion about the production process and that the best IPM tools are being used. The PMSP is a reference of pests and possible control measures. A detailed table on variety resistance to diseases helps the processors chose the best varieties. Tables listing all labeled pesticides for the pea crop in NY detail modes of action and resistance groups as well as the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) and enables the industry to choose the most effective and environmentally friendly pesticides. |
