Funded Project
Funding Program: Regional IPM Competitive Grants - Northeastern
Project Title: Potato Varietal Mixtures for Potato Leafhopper Management on Organic Farms
Project Directors (PDs):
Abby Seaman [1]
Ward Tingey [2]
Alison Power [3]
Lead State: NY

Lead Organization: Cornell University
Research Funding: $16,194
Start Date: Jun-01-2006

End Date: May-31-2007
Pests Involved: potato leafhoppers, PLH
Site/Commodity: potatoes
Area of Emphasis: organic, resistance, resistant
Summary: Organic farmers in several northeast states experience significant yield reduction from the effects of potato leafhopper feeding. Currently, only one control option exists, application of an approved insecticide. Organic certification standards discourage reliance on pest management approaches that rely on chemical controls. This project examines the potential for planting mixtures of potato leafhopper susceptible and resistant varieties to protect the susceptible varieties from leafhopper damage.

Objectives: 1) Determine whether planting a mixture of a potato leafhopper-susceptible potato variety and a resistant clone can reduce damage and yield reduction on the susceptible variety.

2) Conduct a trial of insecticides approved for organic production for efficacy against potato leafhopper.
