Lead State: NJ

Lead Organization: Rutgers University
Cooperating State(s): New York
Undesignated Funding: $7,125
Start Date: Apr-01-2009

End Date: Mar-31-2010
Pests Involved: powdery mildew, downy mildew, fungus, fungi
Site/Commodity: cucurbits, vegetables
Area of Emphasis: fungicide resistance management
Summary: Cucurbit Downy and Powdery mildew are two of the most important diseases of cucurbit crops in the United States. In recent years, fungicide resistance has been detected in both pathogens in the Northeast and in other cucurbit production regions of the US. Importantly, most of the current fungicides recommended for their control have a high risk for resistance development because of their targeted modes-of-action. Because of this, and differences in state fungicide recommendations, regional IPM guidelines for effective resistance management and control need to be developed for cucurbit growers in the Northeast. Whilst these are two of the most important pathogens, they are not the only pathogens for which there are concerns about resistance development in the region. Thus, the principles that growers learn from this project will have far reaching impacts as they incorporate this knowledge into managing fungicide resistance development in other important pathogens in other vegetable crops. The purpose of this multi-state project is to develop and disseminate regional fungicide resistance management guidelines for cucurbit powdery and downy mildew control in the Northeastern United States.

Objectives: The objective of this regional mini-IPM grant project is to develop and disseminate a single regional fungicide resistance management and control guideline FRAC table for cucurbit powdery and downy mildew for the Northeastern United States.

Proposal

Fungicide Resistance Management Guidelines for Cucurbit Downy Mildew and Powdery Mildew Control in the Northeast United States - 2011 (Publication)

Final Report:

Impacts
Fungicide resistance management guidelines for powdery and downy mildew control are extremely useful for all cucurbit growers in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. These guidelines help cucurbit growers effectively manage these two important diseases with an emphasis on fungicide resistance management. By using these guidelines when developing and implementing control strategies for these diseases growers can i) help reduce the chances for resistance development on their farm, ii) help prolong the efficacy of high-risk fungicides, iii) and effectively manage both diseases. Fungicide resistance management tables such as this, and the annual Fungicide Resistance Management Guidelines for Vegetable Crops Grown in the Mid-Atlantic region have become widely-accepted and adopted by stakeholders in the region.
Outcomes
These guidelines help cucurbit growers in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast region reduce the chances for fungicide resistance development on their farm, ii) help prolong the efficacy of high-risk fungicides, iii) and effectively manage both diseases.
