Summary: Ticks and tick-borne diseases a major public health concern and emerging pests in the states of the north-central region as well as in other parts of the United States. Eleven of the seventeen tick-borne pathogens in the U.S. are known to infect humans and the number of counties with a high incidence of Lyme disease is growing in the Northeastern and Midwestern states. With eight tick-borne diseases and five species of ticks already firmly established in the north-central region, this area needs urgent attention to adequately address the health problems that tick-borne diseases are causing with an integrated approach.
The goal of the Working Group is to expand the network that can impact reducing the risk of exposure to infected ticks and the potential of diseases. To meet this goal, the Working Group collaborates on best integrated tick-management practices, strategizes on activities and needed investments, exchanges knowledge and shares resources efficiently.
The Public Tick Working Group will work towards this goal in 2017-2018 by educating policy makers about tick-borne diseases costs and needed investments during a visit to Capitol Hill as part of a Tick Mini Symposium, and by developing educational materials focusing on policy maker information needs. Further, the Working Group will identify new areas where tick-borne diseases are gaining a foothold and distribute information to key contacts in those areas. The Working Group hosts regular conference calls with guest speakers, shares news and opportunities through a listserv and plans to update its stakeholder priorities.

Objectives: 1. Continue to coordinate monthly Public Tick IPM Working Group calls. Identify speakers to share latest research and projects. Continue to manage a listserv (hosted at University of Rhode Island). Maintain the Working Group website containing general information and news, meeting minutes, priorities, resources and project development.
2. Organize and facilitate a Tick Mini Symposium as part of the IPM Symposium in Baltimore in March 2018. The Tick Mini Symposium would bring together participants of the working group and other interested researchers to present and exchange on state of science and approaches to integrated tick management.
Organize a visit to Capitol Hill to raise awareness of tick research to policy makers.
3. Educate policy makers about tick-borne disease costs and public policy options by developing a fact sheet.
Strengthen relationships with groups who successfully work with lobbying groups in D.C. by inviting guest speakers to conference calls.
Update fact sheet to use during 2018 Capitol Hill visit conveying most important information to educate policy makers.
4. Identify new areas where tick-borne diseases are gaining a foothold and relay information on available resources about integrated approaches for managing ticks to key contacts of those areas.
